ORCID stands for Open Researcher & Contributor Identifier. It is a nonprofit, scholar-driven organization. ORCID iDs are free, unique, and persistent identifiers for individuals, kind of like scholarly fingerprints or digital object identifiers (DOIs) for people. ORCID allows you to receive credit for your work, distinguish yourself from other researchers, and maintain a consistent, unique profile of your scholarship across changes in name, affiliation, and language.
ORCID improves the visibility of your work and keeps it all in one place. A key component of ORCID is the idea to "enter once and reuse often," so your profile and data are interconnected across systems. In addition, an increasing number of publishers and funders are requiring ORCID iDs.
Good news! UNCW is an institutional ORCID member, meaning that we have increased support for ORCID use and integration. ORCID registration is free and takes 30 seconds. Linking your profile to UNCW allows your profile to be imported to other systems on campus such as Faculty Success and OSPREY.
You can update your ORCID record manually, but ORCID also interfaces with "search and link" tools that allow you to import information about your scholarship into your ORCID record with a few clicks!
