Open Access Publishing

Read-and-Publish deals are subscription contracts between UNCW Library and publishers that allow UNCW authors to avoid article processing charges (APCs) when publishing open access in some portion of those publishers' journal portfolios.

Steps for UNCW Authors

Step 1: Identify eligible journals
  • Refer to the information below about each specific publisher agreement to browse or search for journals included in a UNCW Library Read-and-Publish deal. If you have questions about journal eligibility or need support identifying suitable options, contact your liaison librarian at this link or contact the Open Knowledge & Research Impact Librarian using the links to the left.
Step 2: Designate a UNCW-affiliated author as the corresponding author during submission
  • To qualify for coverage in any and all eligible journals, the article’s corresponding author must be affiliated with UNCW.
Step 3: Upon acceptance, confirm that credits or funds remain to cover your article's APCs
  • The pools through which APCs are covered differ between each deal. If your article is accepted near the end of the calendar year, we encourage you to confirm with UNCW Library that enough credits or funds remain in that pool to cover your article's APCs.
Step 4: Upon acceptance, indicate UNCW Library's support by including the provided acknowledgement statement in the article's funding disclosure or acknowledgement section
  • In the below information about each agreement, you will find acknowledgement statements that recognize UNCW Library's role in providing an open access pathway for your article. We request that you include the corresponding statement in the article's funding disclosure or acknowledgement section.
Step 5: Upon publication, deposit a copy of the article in the UNCW Institutional Repository
  • Once your article is published open access, you can either deposit a copy in the UNCW Institutional Repository yourself using the steps described in this LibGuide, or send a copy to the Open Knowledge & Research Impact Librarian for help depositing.
