The Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History is located on the 2nd floor of Discovery Hall in the UNCW Library.
The Center is open from 10am to 2pm, Monday - Friday. Appointments are not required, but we strongly encourage visitors to contact us in advance of any planned research visit to discuss your research topic and confirm the availability of collections. Onsite research assistance may be limited.
Prior to visiting the Center, users should familiarize themselves with our access and use policies.
From 1947-1969, the Dean of Wilmington College oversaw all the academic program. After the college became the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the Academic Dean/Dean of Faculty held this responsibility
UNC Wilmington reorganized Academic Affairs in 1979, creating the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Education, Business Administration, and Nursing. Each college or school had a Dean for its academic programs, reporting to the Provost (Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs). Daniel B. Plyler, Wilmington College biology professor since 1966, was the first College of Arts and Sciences Dean. Charles L. Cahill was the first Provost.

*From 1973-1976, Charles Cahill was Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and there were two Assistant Deans – Daniel B. Plyler and James K. McGowan.
Daniel B. Plyler was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1979-1989 and UNCW Academic Dean from 1976-1979.
Carolyn H. Simmons was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1990-1995.
Jo Ann M. Seiple was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1996-2004. She had previously served as Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1989-1990
P. Nelson Reid was Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2004-2005.
David P. Cordle was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2005-2013.
Stephen McNamee was Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2013-2014.
Aswani Volety was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2014-2019. Here he is photographed in 2018. He returned to the University as Chancellor in 2022.
Richard L. Ogle was Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2019 August - 2021 June.
Kemille Moore was Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, 2021 June-July.
Michelle Scatton-Tessier was Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, 2021 August - 2023 June.
