Spotlights on UNCW History
- Spotlight: First day of classes for Wilmington College, September 4, 1947Wilmington College began as a temporary college center under the Division of Extension at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1946. After the passage of a public referendum in March 1947, Wilmington College gained the local support and a property tax levy to earn permanent status.
- Spotlight: First Wilmington College Graduation Ceremony, May 31, 1949Wilmington College awarded the Associate in Arts to 14 graduates at its inaugural graduation ceremony,. There were many more students who had registered in 1946-1947. It is unknown why so many students left. It's possible that many transferred while others had to work. The college was founded in part to serve GI's returning from service during World War II.
- Spotlight: Classes begin on College Road, June 5, 1961Wilmington College moved from the Isaac Bear building--a former elementary school on Market Street--to College Road just in time for summer school.
- Spotlight: Wilmington College becomes a senior college, July 1, 1963By Act of the N. C. Legislature, Asheville-Biltmore College, Charlotte College, and Wilmington College became public senior colleges effective July 1.
