"Native Americans who have served in the military may be eligible for health care services from both VA and IHS, but according to reports some have had problems accessing care."

GAO was asked to examine Native American human trafficking, reviewing human trafficking investigation and prosecution data from fiscal years 2013-2016...

"The unemployment rate for Native American veterans living on tribal land has been higher than that for all veterans. GAO makes recommendations on how the DOL (Dept. of Labor) can address these issues.

GAO "obtained perspectives of tribal communities through attendance at two tribal conferences; interviews with tribal elders...including veterans..." to improve health care access for Native American veterans.

This report addresses (1) the extent to which tribal and major city LEA's (Law Enforcement Agencies) have encountered human trafficking in Indian country or of Native Americans, (2) factors affecting the ability of LEA's to identify and investigate this specific human trafficking, and (3) availability of services to Native American victims of human trafficking."
