Native American History

Members of the American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native American population were surveyed about their perceptions as to why they were having difficulty gaining access to federal HHS discretionary grants. The report also "considers strategies for improving access."

"Several leaders from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)" and other nationally recognized health providers joined together to hold the "first national conference on Native American people with serious mental illness....to discuss the challenges that face Federal agencies and the Indian nations."

This Department of Health publication via the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration describes symptoms and treatment options for those in the Native American community.

"Historically, the American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) population in the US has faced health disparities including greater prevalence of physical and mental health problems and high uninsured rates when compared with the non-AIAN population."

"Using Traditional Foods and Sustainable Ecological Approaches for Health Promotion and Type 2 Diabetes prevention in American Indian and Alaska Native communities was a 6-year cooperative agreement that championed 17 tribal programs...working to restore access to local, traditional foods and physical activity to promote health."
